What is Vitagon by Alpha Pharma?

Vitagon is a ready-to-mix HCG kit from Alpha Pharma. Each box combines the hormone and the liquid needed to dissolve it: three vials of dry powder with 5000 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin each, plus three ampoules with 1 ml of solvent. That makes 15 000 IU in total, enough for a long period of use.

Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone. Its biological action is almost the same as that of luteinizing hormone (LH), the messenger that the pituitary gland sends to the testes to start testosterone production. Because of this, Vitagon is classed among gonadotropins, a group of protein hormones that also includes FSH; it has nothing in common chemically with anabolic steroids.

What are the effects of Vitagon?

In the clinic, HCG is used to treat low testosterone of pituitary origin, to help testicles descend in boys and to induce ovulation in women. In sport it is used as a support product during and after steroid cycles. Its effects in men include:

• direct stimulation of testosterone synthesis in the Leydig cells;
• maintenance of testicular size while the body's own LH is suppressed;
• support of spermatogenesis and fertility;
• a smoother hormonal recovery when the cycle ends.

How to prepare and use Vitagon

To prepare a vial, the solvent from one ampoule is slowly added to the powder and the vial is gently swirled, not shaken, until the liquid is clear. One vial with 1 ml of liquid then holds 5000 IU per ml, so 0.1 ml contains 500 IU. The solvent is meant for preparing the injection; users who split a vial into many doses over several weeks often prefer bacteriostatic water, which contains a preservative. Mixed HCG must be kept in the refrigerator.

Doses reported in bodybuilding are mostly between 250 and 500 IU, two or three times a week, during the cycle or in the weeks just before post cycle therapy. Long runs of high doses are avoided because of estrogen build-up and possible loss of testicular sensitivity. Every protocol is individual: the dose and duration of Vitagon must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.

What side effects can Vitagon cause?

Higher testosterone also means more conversion to estradiol, so the classic side effects are puffiness, water retention and sensitive nipples that can progress to gynecomastia. Acne, headache, fatigue, mood swings and irritation at the injection site are also described. Severe allergic reactions and blood clots are rare.

The product is contraindicated in prostate cancer, breast cancer in men, hormone-dependent tumors and hypersensitivity to HCG. In women, ovarian hyperstimulation is a known risk.
