What is Vemox 500 by Zee Drugs?

At 500 mg per capsule, Vemox 500 contains the strength of amoxicillin most often prescribed to adults. The manufacturer is Zee Drugs, and each pack contains 30 capsules. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, introduced into medical use in the early 1970s as an improvement on ampicillin with better absorption from the gut, and it remains a first-choice drug for many everyday bacterial infections.

Like other beta-lactam antibiotics, amoxicillin interferes with the construction of the bacterial cell wall, which causes susceptible bacteria to break apart and die. It acts on many streptococci, some strains of Haemophilus and E. coli, Listeria and Helicobacter pylori. Bacteria that make beta-lactamase enzymes, including most Staphylococcus aureus, are resistant to it.

Common uses

Vemox 500 is used in adults for bacterial infections of the ears, nose and throat, the sinuses, the lower airways and lungs, the teeth and gums, and in some cases the urinary tract. It is a key part of combination treatment against Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium behind many stomach and duodenal ulcers, together with another antibiotic and an acid-reducing drug. It is also used for early Lyme disease and, in a single larger dose, to protect certain heart patients before dental work.

A word for those who inject: a red, hot, swollen and painful injection site is not a job for a pack of capsules at home. How is Vemox 500 taken?

Typical adult regimens are 500 mg every eight hours or 500 to 875 mg every twelve hours, depending on the infection, with higher doses for pneumonia and some other serious infections. Ulcer regimens for Helicobacter pylori use a larger dose twice a day, usually for one to two weeks. Courses for common infections commonly last five to ten days; at three capsules a day, one pack lasts ten days. Capsules can be taken with or without food. Stopping early or using leftovers from an old course encourages resistance, so the choice of antibiotic, the dose and the duration must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.

Possible side effects

• diarrhea, nausea and, less often, vomiting;
• a rash, which may be harmless or the first sign of allergy;
• allergic reactions such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat and breathing difficulty, which need emergency help;
• thrush in the mouth or vagina;
• rarely, severe diarrhea caused by Clostridioides difficile, liver changes or kidney problems.

People with a penicillin allergy must not take amoxicillin. It can raise methotrexate toxicity, change the effect of warfarin, and cause rashes more often together with allopurinol, so a doctor needs to know about other medicines.
