What is Vemox 250 by Zee Drugs?

Vemox 250 is an antibiotic from Zee Drugs containing amoxicillin, 250 mg per capsule, in a pack of 30 capsules. Amoxicillin is one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the world. It belongs to the aminopenicillins, a branch of the penicillin family, and like all penicillins it is a beta-lactam antibiotic.

Amoxicillin kills bacteria rather than just slowing them down. It binds to proteins that bacteria need to build their cell wall, so the wall becomes weak and the bacterial cell bursts. It is absorbed well when swallowed, with or without food, but is cleared from the blood within hours, so it is taken several times a day. Antibiotics act only on bacteria: amoxicillin does nothing against colds, flu, COVID-19 or other viral infections.

What is it used for?

Doctors use amoxicillin for a range of common bacterial infections, including:

• strep throat and tonsillitis;
• middle ear infections and bacterial sinusitis;
• community-acquired pneumonia and some chest infections;
• dental infections;
• certain urinary tract infections, depending on local resistance;
• early Lyme disease and, combined with other drugs, Helicobacter pylori stomach infection.

Since Vemox 250 is listed among skin products, one honest point is important. Many skin infections, such as boils, infected cuts and abscesses, are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and most strains of this bacterium produce an enzyme called penicillinase that destroys plain amoxicillin. For those infections, doctors usually choose a different antibiotic or amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin alone works for some streptococcal skin infections, but the diagnosis should come first.

How is it taken?

For adults, a usual schedule for mild to moderate infections is 250 to 500 mg every eight hours. With the 250 mg strength that means one or two capsules three times a day, spaced evenly through the day. Courses commonly last five to ten days, and strep throat is typically treated for ten. At one capsule three times a day, a pack of 30 capsules covers ten days. The right antibiotic, dose and duration must be agreed with a qualified medical professional. Doses are adjusted for poor kidney function.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea and skin rash. A yeast infection of the mouth or vagina can follow a course of antibiotics. Allergic reactions to penicillins range from hives to dangerous swelling of the face and throat or anaphylaxis, which need emergency care. Severe, watery or bloody diarrhea during or after treatment may signal Clostridioides difficile infection. Amoxicillin must not be used by people allergic to any penicillin, and caution is needed in those allergic to cephalosporins and in people with glandular fever, who often develop a rash with it.
