What is Thyro3 by Alpha Pharma?
Thyro3 is Alpha Pharma's liothyronine tablet: 25 mcg of T3 per pill in a pack of 30 pills. Liothyronine is a prescription thyroid hormone, the laboratory-made version of triiodothyronine. In medicine it has been used for decades, and in sports it is one of the best-known metabolic drugs used during a diet.
The thyroid gland produces two hormones, T4 and T3. T4 circulates in larger amounts but has to be converted into T3 to act, while T3 binds directly to receptors in the cell nucleus and controls how fast cells use energy. Liothyronine therefore acts quickly, within hours of a dose, and is cleared much faster than T4, which lingers in the blood for about a week.
Medical use and use in sport
An underactive thyroid causes tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, dry skin, constipation and low mood. Doctors use liothyronine:
- to treat hypothyroidism, alone or together with levothyroxine;
- for patients who feel unwell on T4 alone despite normal test results;
- before certain thyroid cancer scans and tests, as a short-acting replacement;
- in psychiatry, occasionally as an add-on to antidepressants.
Athletes and bodybuilders use Thyro3 for a different purpose. During a long diet, the body lowers its own T3 to save energy, and metabolism slows. Taking T3 counteracts that, raising energy expenditure so that fat loss continues. It is usually combined with a careful diet, cardio and anabolic drugs that protect muscle from the catabolic side of the hormone.
How is Thyro3 taken?
In thyroid replacement, adults usually start with 25 mcg daily, and the doctor adjusts the dose in steps every one to two weeks; older patients and those with heart disease start much lower. In cutting phases, common practice is 25 mcg a day at first, then 50 mcg, with courses of about six to eight weeks and a gradual reduction at the end. At one tablet a day, the 30-pill pack lasts a month; at 50 mcg, two weeks.
The tablet is taken in the morning, the same way every day. Dose and duration must be agreed with a qualified medical professional, preferably with thyroid blood tests before the start.
Possible side effects
Side effects are signs of too much thyroid hormone. They include a rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, nervousness, trembling, sweating, intolerance to heat, sleeping problems, headache, diarrhea and changes in the menstrual cycle. Long periods of excess can thin the bones. During use the body's own thyroid production is suppressed and takes some time to return.
Liothyronine must not be used by people with untreated adrenal insufficiency or an overactive thyroid. Heart disease, high blood pressure and older age demand great caution. Using thyroid hormone purely for weight loss with a normal thyroid can be dangerous, especially with stimulants.
