What is Npecia 5 by Sai Michael Biotech?
Npecia 5 is a finasteride tablet produced by Sai Michael Biotech. The 5 in its name stands for the strength: each pill contains 5 mg of finasteride, the substance of the brands Proscar and Propecia, and a pack holds 50 pills.
Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid that inhibits 5-alpha reductase, mainly its type 2 form. This enzyme converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate, the scalp, the skin and other tissues. By blocking it, finasteride lowers DHT in the blood by roughly two thirds, while testosterone stays the same or rises slightly. Unlike anti-androgens, it does not block the androgen receptor itself, so the actions of testosterone on muscle and libido are largely preserved.
What is Npecia 5 used for?
The 5 mg strength is the dose for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that is common in men over fifty. Because DHT is the main growth signal for prostate tissue, finasteride gradually shrinks the gland. Over months this improves urine flow, reduces the urge to urinate at night and lowers the risk of acute urinary retention and of prostate surgery. It is sometimes combined with an alpha-blocker such as doxazosin for faster relief.
Hair loss is treated with a lower dose, 1 mg a day, and the 5 mg tablet is not the standard choice for that purpose. Some men divide it to approximate the lower dose, but this gives uneven amounts and leaves broken tablet fragments.
Athletes on testosterone cycles sometimes take finasteride to limit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the androgen behind prostate enlargement and scalp hair loss.
Dosing
For BPH, the standard regimen is 5 mg, one tablet, once a day, with or without food. Improvement in symptoms usually takes several months, and treatment of an enlarged prostate is often continued long term, since the gland grows again after stopping. At that rate, the 50 pills in a pack cover 50 days. Finasteride has a short half-life of about six hours, but its effect on the enzyme lasts much longer, which makes once-daily use sufficient.
Prostate symptoms need a proper diagnosis first, and the dose and course length must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.
Side effects and warnings
- Lower libido, erectile dysfunction and a smaller ejaculate volume.
- Breast tenderness or enlargement.
- Depressed mood; reports of suicidal thoughts have been added to the prescribing information.
- Rash or other allergic reactions.
Sexual side effects have occasionally persisted after stopping. Finasteride lowers PSA by about half, so the doctor must know about it when testing for prostate cancer. Women who are or may become pregnant must not take it and should not touch broken or crushed tablets, because it can harm the development of a male fetus.
