What is Megamentinc 625 by Intas?

Megamentinc 625 is the middle strength of the amoxicillin-clavulanate antibiotics from Intas in our catalog, comparable to the well-known Augmentin 625. Each unit combines 500 mg of amoxicillin with 125 mg of clavulanic acid, and one pack holds 6 capsules. This 500/125 ratio is probably the most widely prescribed form of the combination for adults.

The two ingredients have different jobs. Amoxicillin is the antibiotic: a broad-spectrum penicillin that attacks the bacterial cell wall. Clavulanic acid is the bodyguard. Bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes would normally destroy amoxicillin before it can act, and clavulanic acid ties up those enzymes so the antibiotic survives and works.

Which infections is it used for?

Thanks to that protection, Megamentinc 625 reaches organisms that often shrug off amoxicillin alone: enzyme-producing Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis from the airways, many Klebsiella and E. coli strains from the urinary tract, anaerobes from the mouth and gut, and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus from the skin. MRSA stays out of reach. Doctors prescribe it for infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, middle ear infection, flare-ups of chronic bronchitis and pneumonia, urinary tract infections including kidney infection when the bacteria are sensitive, and skin and soft tissue infections including infected wounds, cellulitis and bites. It is also used for deep dental infections and some bone and joint infections. For gym-goers, an infected graze from equipment, an infected blister or an inflamed wound may qualify, but a doctor should look at it first, because the right antibiotic depends on the bacteria involved.

How is it taken?

The standard adult dose is one 625 mg unit three times a day, every eight hours, swallowed whole with water at the beginning of a meal. Food improves the absorption of clavulanic acid and makes stomach upset less likely. Most courses run for five to ten days, and some infections need up to two weeks; with 6 capsules per pack, one pack lasts two days. The course should be completed as prescribed even when symptoms improve early. The dose is lowered for patients with impaired kidney function. Choice of antibiotic, dosage and duration must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.

Possible side effects

  • diarrhea, nausea, indigestion and occasional vomiting, often milder when taken with food;
  • yeast infections of the mouth or genital area;
  • skin rash, itching or hives, which may indicate allergy;
  • rarely, liver inflammation with jaundice, more likely with longer courses and in older men;
  • rarely, severe colitis caused by Clostridioides difficile.

Anaphylaxis, with swelling of the throat and difficulty breathing, is an emergency. The drug is contraindicated in penicillin allergy and in people who previously had jaundice or liver problems from amoxicillin-clavulanate. People with glandular fever should avoid it because of the high rate of rash.
