What is Megamentin 375 by Intas?
Megamentin 375 is the lowest strength of the Megamentin antibiotics from Intas listed in our catalog. Like Augmentin, it contains two active ingredients: 250 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavulanic acid, which together make up the 375 mg shown on the label. The pack contains 6 capsules.
Amoxicillin belongs to the penicillin group and kills bacteria by stopping them from building a stable cell wall. Its weak point is that many bacteria produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that breaks amoxicillin down. Clavulanic acid, a substance originally isolated from soil bacteria, blocks that enzyme. The pairing has been in medical use since the early 1980s and is one of the most familiar antibiotic combinations in family medicine and dentistry.
When is it used?
The 375 mg strength is generally chosen for mild to moderate infections where resistant bacteria are likely, for example:
- tooth and gum infections after dental work;
- mild sinus or ear infections that came back after plain amoxicillin;
- uncomplicated skin infections, infected small wounds and minor bites;
- some bladder infections, when tests show the bacteria are sensitive.
Doctors also use this strength when a lower amoxicillin dose is preferred, for instance in smaller adults or people with reduced kidney function who need dose adjustment. More serious infections are usually treated with the 625 mg or 1000 mg versions.
Dosage and an important detail
The usual adult schedule for Megamentin 375 is one unit three times a day, about every eight hours, taken at the start of a meal. Typical courses last five to seven days for mild infections, sometimes longer. The 6 capsules in one pack correspond to two days at that rate, so more packs are needed to finish a course. A frequent mistake is to take two 375 mg units instead of one 625 mg unit. The amoxicillin dose then matches, but the clavulanic acid dose doubles to 250 mg, which raises the risk of diarrhea and other side effects without extra benefit. Strengths are not interchangeable, and the dose and duration must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.
Side effects and precautions
Loose stools or diarrhea, nausea and vaginal or oral thrush are the most common problems. Rash can occur and may signal allergy. Rarely, the combination causes inflammation of the liver with jaundice, sometimes appearing days or weeks after the course has finished; dark urine, pale stools or yellowing eyes must be checked by a doctor. Severe or bloody diarrhea, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing need emergency help. People allergic to penicillin, and those who developed jaundice with this antibiotic before, must not use it.
