What is Lasix by Lasitan?
The name Lasix is often explained as "lasts six", a reference to the roughly six hours that a dose of furosemide keeps the kidneys working. This Lasix is produced by Lasitan and supplied as 40 mg tablets, 15 pills per pack. The active substance, furosemide, is a sulfonamide-type loop diuretic that has been in clinical use since the 1960s.
Furosemide acts in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, the segment of the kidney tubule that normally reabsorbs a large share of filtered sodium chloride. By blocking the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter there, it lets a large amount of salt and water leave the body in the urine. Potassium, magnesium and calcium are lost along with it.
Effects and uses
Doctors use furosemide when the body holds on to too much fluid. It relieves breathlessness in heart failure by clearing fluid from the lungs, reduces swelling of the ankles and abdomen in liver and kidney disease, and helps lower blood pressure in selected patients.
Physique athletes are interested in it for the look on contest day: less water under the skin, sharper separation, visible veins. In practice the result is often the opposite of what was hoped for. Furosemide removes water from the blood first, not specifically from under the skin, so the muscles can look flat and the athlete may cramp on stage. Diuretics are on the anti-doping prohibited list.
How is Lasix taken?
Medical doses for adults with edema commonly start at 20 to 40 mg once daily in the morning, sometimes more, adjusted by a doctor to the response. For high blood pressure, a common starting scheme is 40 mg twice a day, usually alongside other medicines. Effect starts within an hour of swallowing the tablet.
Bodybuilders who use it before a show usually limit themselves to a single dose of 20 to 40 mg, that is half or one tablet of Lasix, with careful attention to fluids and minerals. Stacking it with other diuretics or repeating doses is how most emergencies happen. The decision about any dose and its timing must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.
Possible side effects
Common effects are frequent urination, thirst, light-headedness and fatigue. More serious problems include:
- severe dehydration and a drop in blood pressure with fainting;
- low potassium, sodium or magnesium, causing cramps, weakness and dangerous heart rhythms;
- gout attacks and higher blood sugar;
- ringing in the ears or hearing loss at high doses.
Interactions matter: NSAIDs blunt its effect, it raises lithium levels, low potassium makes digoxin more toxic, and certain antibiotics add to the hearing risk. People with no urine output, severe electrolyte depletion, or a furosemide allergy must not use it.
