What is Ultima Anastro by Ultima Pharmaceuticals?

Ultima Anastro is an oral anti-estrogen from Ultima Pharmaceuticals, sold in a compact pack of 30 pills. Every pill contains 1 mg of anastrozole, the same active substance as the cancer medicine Arimidex.

Anastrozole belongs to the third generation of aromatase inhibitors. It is not a hormone and not a steroid. It occupies the aromatase enzyme reversibly, so androgens are converted into estrogens much more slowly while the anastrozole level stays high. The result is a marked fall in circulating estradiol, which is exactly what its oncology use relies on and what athletes borrow it for.

Anastrozole among estrogen-control drugs

Bodybuilders have three main tools against excess estrogen, and each works differently:

• SERMs such as tamoxifen and clomiphene block estrogen receptors in some tissues but do not lower the estradiol level itself;
• exemestane is a steroidal inhibitor that binds aromatase permanently;
• anastrozole and letrozole are nonsteroidal inhibitors that lower estradiol itself, with anastrozole being the milder and easier to fine-tune of the two.

That moderate strength is the main reason Ultima Anastro is chosen for testosterone cycles. It cuts down water retention, nipple sensitivity and estrogenic bloating without forcing estrogen to the floor, provided the dose is right.

Dosage and timing

Reported practice is 0.25 to 1 mg every other day for men, while the medical dose in breast cancer is 1 mg each day. Timing matters as much as the amount. Because estradiol follows testosterone, anastrozole is usually begun soon after the first injections of a long-ester cycle and continued until the last ester has cleared, which with enanthate or cypionate takes about two weeks after the final shot. A blood test for estradiol, done a few weeks in, shows whether the dose fits.

Who should be careful

Ultima Anastro is not meant for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for children or for anyone allergic to anastrozole. People with osteoporosis, heart disease or liver or kidney problems should use it only under medical control. In men, the most common complaints come from overshooting the dose and driving estradiol too low: stiff and painful joints, loss of libido, erection problems, tiredness, irritability and poorer cholesterol readings. Hot flushes, headache, nausea, rash and thinning hair have also been reported. Bone density can decline if estradiol is kept very low for months.
