What is Promifen by Alpha Pharma?

At the end of an anabolic steroid cycle the body's own testosterone production is usually switched off, and it does not always restart quickly by itself. Promifen by Alpha Pharma is one of the drugs used to speed that restart. It contains clomiphene citrate, 50 mg per pill, with 50 pills in a pack.

Clomiphene citrate belongs to the selective estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs, the same family as tamoxifen. In the hypothalamus and pituitary it acts as an estrogen antagonist: it occupies the receptors that normally register estradiol and so cancels the brake that estrogen puts on hormone production. The result is a rise in LH and FSH, the two pituitary hormones that tell the testes to make testosterone and sperm.

Promifen in post cycle therapy

During a cycle, high androgen and estrogen levels tell the brain that no more testosterone is needed, so LH and FSH fall close to zero and the testes shrink. When the cycle stops, the user is left with low testosterone until the axis wakes up again. Promifen shortens this gap. It is used to:

• stimulate LH and FSH release so the testes resume work;
• limit the loss of muscle and strength in the weeks after the last dose;
• ease the fatigue, low mood and weak libido of the recovery phase;
• reduce the effect of estrogen at the hypothalamus while hormones rebalance.

It is often paired with tamoxifen, which acts on the same axis and also protects breast tissue, and after long cycles HCG is sometimes used beforehand to wake up the testes first.

How long and how much?

The start of PCT depends on what was used. After short-acting orals or propionate, it is usually started within a few days; after enanthate or cypionate, about two weeks after the last injection; after nandrolone decanoate, often three weeks. Commonly reported doses are 50 mg a day for three to four weeks, or 100 mg a day for the first week and then 50 mg. The 50 pills in this pack are enough for a four-week course at 50 mg daily.

Blood tests for testosterone, LH and estradiol at the end show whether recovery has happened. The final dose and length of treatment should always be agreed with a qualified medical professional.

Side effects

Promifen is usually well tolerated at PCT doses, yet some users report headache, flushing, nausea and emotional ups and downs. Clomiphene can affect vision, causing blurring, floaters or flashes; anyone who notices this should stop the drug and see an eye doctor. Because testosterone rises, estradiol may rise with it and bring water retention or sensitive nipples. Clomiphene is not used in pregnancy, liver disease, pituitary tumors or uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal disease, and in women it can cause ovarian enlargement.
