What is Fempro by Cipla?
Fempro is Cipla's brand of letrozole, one of the most powerful aromatase inhibitors in medicine. The pack holds 10 pills, each with 2.5 mg of letrozole, which is the full daily dose used in breast cancer treatment.
Letrozole is a nonsteroidal compound of the triazole class, developed under the brand name Femara. It competes with androgens for the active site of aromatase and blocks the enzyme reversibly but very strongly. In postmenopausal women, where almost all estrogen comes from aromatase in peripheral tissues, it reduces circulating estrogen to a small fraction of its former level. It does not interfere noticeably with the production of cortisol or aldosterone, which made it a big step forward compared with older inhibitors.
Uses of Fempro
The main medical use of letrozole is hormone receptor positive breast cancer after menopause, both after surgery and in advanced disease. A second field has grown around it: fertility. Gynecologists prescribe it off-label to trigger ovulation, and several guidelines now prefer it to clomiphene for women with polycystic ovary syndrome, because it supports the growth of a single follicle without the anti-estrogen effect on the uterine lining.
In bodybuilding, Fempro is known as the heavy option for estrogen control. It is used in small amounts on cycles with large doses of aromatizing steroids, or at higher doses for short periods when gynecomastia begins to show despite other measures. In men it also raises LH and testosterone by removing estrogen feedback.
How is letrozole used?
Medical regimens are fixed: 2.5 mg once a day in oncology, and in fertility treatment 2.5 to 7.5 mg daily for five days early in the menstrual cycle. Men using it for estrogen control on a cycle typically report far lower doses, such as 0.25 to 0.5 mg every other day or two to three times a week, because the full 2.5 mg would wipe out estradiol. Letrozole has a half-life of roughly two days and reaches stable blood levels only after weeks, so dose changes show up slowly.
Given how strong it is, letrozole should never be dosed by feel. The amount and the length of use must be agreed with a qualified medical professional and checked by blood tests.
Side effects
- Joint and bone pain, often the first sign of very low estradiol.
- Hot flushes, sweating and fatigue.
- Low libido, erectile problems and depressed mood in men.
- Higher cholesterol levels.
- Bone loss and a higher fracture risk with long-term use.
- Headache, dizziness, swelling of the ankles and hair thinning.
Letrozole must not be taken during pregnancy, since it can harm the unborn child, or during breastfeeding. Women who may become pregnant need reliable contraception unless it is used under fertility supervision.
