What is Clomid 50mg by Cipla?

Clomiphene citrate has been part of fertility medicine since the 1960s, and the 50 mg tablet is its standard strength. Clomid 50mg from Cipla is exactly that: tablets of 50 mg clomiphene citrate, packed 10 to a box.

The substance is a SERM, a selective estrogen receptor modulator. Clomiphene is actually a blend of two isomers, enclomiphene and zuclomiphene, which behave differently: enclomiphene acts mostly as an estrogen blocker, while zuclomiphene has weak estrogen-like activity and stays in the body much longer. Together they compete with estradiol at its receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary, removing the negative feedback that normally keeps gonadotropin output in check.

What does Clomid 50mg do?

With estrogen feedback blocked, the pituitary releases more luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). What follows depends on who takes it.

In women with irregular or absent ovulation, including many with polycystic ovary syndrome, the extra FSH helps a follicle mature and release an egg. This is the labeled purpose of clomiphene and the one it was developed for.

In men, LH stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to make testosterone, and FSH supports sperm production. That is why bodybuilders use Clomid 50mg in post cycle therapy, to bring the hormonal axis back online after anabolic steroids have shut it down. Doctors also prescribe it off-label to men with low testosterone who want to keep their fertility, since external testosterone would suppress it.

Commonly reported dosing

For ovulation induction, the label regimen is 50 mg once a day for five days, usually starting around the fifth day of the cycle, with an increase to 100 mg only if ovulation does not occur. A box of ten tablets therefore covers two such five-day courses.

In men, post cycle protocols most often run 50 mg a day for three to four weeks, while off-label hypogonadism treatment tends to use lower amounts, from 25 mg every other day up to 50 mg daily, adjusted by blood tests. None of these figures is a personal prescription; the dose and treatment period have to be agreed with a qualified medical professional.

Possible side effects

Pregnancy, liver disease, abnormal uterine bleeding, non-PCOS ovarian cysts, a pituitary tumor and uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal problems rule out clomiphene.
