What is Caberlin 0.5 by Sun Pharma?
Caberlin 0.5 is a medicine from Sun Pharma that contains cabergoline, the substance also known under the brand names Cabaser and Dostinex. The package holds 4 tablets with 0.5 mg of cabergoline in each.
Strictly speaking, cabergoline is neither a hormone nor an anti-estrogen, even though shops list it next to them as an ancillary drug. It is a long-acting dopamine agonist derived from ergot alkaloids. By stimulating dopamine D2 receptors on the prolactin-producing cells of the pituitary gland, it shuts down the release of prolactin, the hormone best known for milk production. A single dose keeps working for days, because cabergoline has an elimination half-life of roughly 63 to 69 hours.
What is it used for?
Doctors prescribe cabergoline for hyperprolactinemia, whether it has no clear cause or comes from a small benign pituitary tumor called a prolactinoma. It is also used to stop milk production after childbirth when breastfeeding is not wanted.
In bodybuilding Caberlin 0.5 appears on cycles with 19-nortestosterone compounds, mainly nandrolone and trenbolone. These steroids can raise prolactin or amplify its effects, and high prolactin in men is associated with:
- a loss of libido and weaker erections;
- sore nipples, gynecomastia and, rarely, fluid from the nipple;
- water retention and a feeling of lethargy;
- further suppression of the body's own testosterone.
Lowering prolactin back into the normal range usually relieves these problems within a few weeks.
How is cabergoline taken?
For hyperprolactinemia, prescribing guidance starts at 0.25 mg twice a week and raises the dose in small steps, no faster than every four weeks, according to prolactin levels. Athletes on nandrolone or trenbolone commonly report 0.25 to 0.5 mg twice a week, ideally after a blood test has confirmed that prolactin is actually high. Depending on whether it is split, one tablet covers one or two doses. Taking it with food helps reduce nausea.
Prolactin should be measured before and during use, since pushing it too low brings no benefit. The dose and the length of the course must be agreed with a qualified medical professional.
Possible side effects
The most frequent complaints are nausea, headache, dizziness, tiredness, constipation and a fall in blood pressure on standing up quickly. At the high doses once used in Parkinson's disease, long-term cabergoline was linked with fibrosis of the heart valves, lungs and other tissues; for that reason it is kept to the lowest effective dose, and doctors may order an echocardiogram during longer treatment. Impulse-control changes, such as compulsive gambling or a stronger sex drive, have been described with dopamine agonists as well.
Cabergoline is not for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of heart valve disease or fibrotic disorders, intolerance to ergot derivatives, or for women with pre-eclampsia. Severe liver disease calls for special caution.
