What is Liv.52 by Himalaya?

Liv.52 is a herbal liver formula made by Himalaya, an Indian company known for its Ayurvedic products. It has been on the market since the 1950s and is one of the most widely sold liver supplements in India and many other countries. Unlike most items in our catalog, it is not a single synthetic drug but a blend of several plant extracts in tablet form, and one pack contains 100 tablets.

The plants usually listed for the tablet include caper bush (Capparis spinosa), chicory (Cichorium intybus), black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), arjuna bark (Terminalia arjuna), coffee senna (Cassia occidentalis), yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and tamarisk (Tamarix gallica). In traditional Indian medicine these herbs are used for digestion, appetite and the liver.

Why do people take it?

The manufacturer presents Liv.52 as support for normal liver function and digestion. In practice people take it:

  • during and after courses of oral anabolic steroids, which are hard on the liver;
  • alongside other medicines that strain the liver, such as some antibiotics or anti-tuberculosis drugs;
  • for poor appetite, indigestion or bloating;
  • after periods of heavy drinking.

The scientific picture should be stated honestly. Laboratory and small clinical studies have reported protective effects on liver cells, but a larger controlled trial in people with advanced alcohol-related cirrhosis did not show a benefit. A herbal product cannot cancel out the damage of a high-dose oral cycle, and it is no replacement for liver blood tests, sensible doses, short cycles and avoiding alcohol.

How is it taken?

Liv.52 is taken by mouth with water, usually two or three times a day following the dosage printed on the label. Athletes who use it during a cycle generally start with the first tablets of an oral steroid and continue for a few weeks after the last dose. Because it is a supplement rather than a prescription drug, there is no standard clinical regimen. How much and how long to take it should be discussed with a qualified medical professional, especially if liver enzymes are already raised or other medicines are being used.

Possible side effects

Most users notice nothing. Mild stomach upset, nausea or loose stools are the complaints mentioned most often. People allergic to plants of the daisy family, which includes chicory and yarrow, may react to it. Data on pregnancy and breastfeeding are lacking, so it should not be used then without a doctor's advice. Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, itching or pain under the right ribs are signs of liver injury: in that case the steroid or other drug should be stopped and a doctor seen at once, rather than relying on a supplement.
